COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Facing the Inevitable End of the World submitted by Meginator on August 27, 2022, 7:09pm This film is very much a product of its time, but its examination of the many different ways that people might react to certain death has a sense of timelessness to it that makes it emotionally resonant today despite its more dated aspects. The story follows an interconnected group of people in and around Melbourne following a nuclear war as they await the oncoming rush of radiation from the northern hemisphere, with both military personnel who are able to view the aftereffects firsthand via a submarine expedition and ordinary folks at home. The characters exhibit a variety of reactions, from complete disbelief to deep grief and reluctant acceptance, that give the film a raw emotional power even when it overplays its hand (as with the central romantic arc, which is a bit melodramatic in the way that it plays out). The film has a slow, creeping tension to it, proving that an orderly, quiet apocalypse can be just as chilling as a more violent one.
