Greatest Mozart Conductor? submitted by tonyphil on July 3, 2013, 9:50am Bruno Walter is on the short list of those conductors whose interpretations of Mozart's orchestral works are most admired. Along with Karl Bohm, Otto Klemperer, and a few others who have conducted in the recording era, Walter stands out among music critics and fans. These recordings were made in 1959-1960, part of the only Mozart cycle of recordings Walter ever made in stereo. The performance of Symphonies 35 & 36 here has a rich, full sound, combining Walter's energetic readings with romanticized moments in the slow passages. Walter was also known as a great interpreter of Beethoven, Brahms, and especially Mahler (whom he championed). Consider pursuing all of Mozart's "Late Symphonies," Nos. 35, 36, 38-41, all considered among the very best of the early classical era.
