Hark! A Breakthrough! submitted by Meginator on August 26, 2020, 4:24pm After a few bad and so-so installments, Now That’s What I Call Music 22 comes roaring out with a solid collection of tracks that collectively make a strong argument for early 2006 being a high point of pop radio. I recognized everything except the Chris Brown song (which, frankly, I’m actually sort of proud of myself for) and could sing along to way more of the words than on most Now compilations, despite being squarely in their target demographic from the start. Not only does this album feature R&B and rap classics like Rihanna’s “S.O.S.”, Sean Paul’s “Temperature”, and Chamillionaire’s “Ridin’”, but it perfectly captures the era of moody pop rock characterized by The Fray’s immortal tearjerker “Cable Car (Over My Head)” and Daniel Powter’s “Bad Day”. This Now album has everything, and even the totally forgettable tracks from Nick Lachey and Ashley Parker Angel(!) are delightful in context. These compilations can really be hit or miss, but this one is definitely a keeper.
