Ridiculous and Sublime submitted by laurie92 on January 27, 2009, 8:18am Where to begin? If you are expecting an English drama with A&E or Masterpiece Theatre quality you will certainly be disappointed. If you like soap opera kitsch you will have a very good time. The Chamomile Lawn was like watching a train wreck in slow motion. It's kind of horrible, but you can't stop watching it. I think a good comparison would be Peyton Place of Valley of the Dolls. I had high hopes as Jennifer Ehle was one of the cast, but the ridiculous characters and dialogue simply outweighed her brilliance. This is basically a WWII soap opera where everyone sleeps with everyone else. It could have been really good fun if it wasn't so BAD. One of the characters is a pedophile and he is described by other characters as "charming, annoying, but eventually boring". Sorry - I can't find pedophiles quite so "charming." My favorite ridiculous passage has to do with another character who, because of wartime scarcity, is an ingenious cook who forages and scavenges for food. One of her specialties is pate made with her "invention" of a cross breeding between guinea pigs and rabbits. HUH????? In what universe can you cross breed totally different species??? Once her secret recipe is discovered she is so ashamed she jumps from a cliff into the Irish Sea, never to be seen onscreen again. She survives, but is forever shamed. Funny.

Interesting submitted by 0liviap0pp on August 22, 2011, 7:14am This is a strange movie about WWII.
