COMMUNITY REVIEWS
Gay Male Speculative Fiction submitted by Meginator on July 27, 2018, 10:05pm First things first: this anthology’s definition of “gay” is strictly in the cissexual male (and usually white) sense of the word; look elsewhere for queer characters of other orientations. The speculative elements run the gamut within science fiction and fantasy, with a large number of stories taking place in environments relatively adjacent to our accepted reality. Still, herein lie zombies, steampunk, and fantasy kingdoms, lending the collection a pleasant unpredictable variety. The standout is Sam J. Miller’s “Angel, Monster, Man”, a story about three men’s experiences during the AIDS epidemic, reflected through their conjured community hero. As a whole, the collection is quite strong and amplifies voices not often heard in more mainstream venues.
