Not as Good as the First Two submitted by Meginator on August 1, 2022, 3:14pm This continuation of the Zoey and Sassafras series includes most of the elements that make the previous books such a pleasure to read (while also being gently educational), but it overshoots its environmentalist message just slightly and loses track of the core storyline. Additionally, this particular installment emphasizes the secret-keeping between Zoey and her mother more than in the other books; while it is played for laughs in this context, the message could get muddled when kids are asked to keep important secrets from other adults. That said, the story itself is another successful blend of fantastic creatures and the scientific method, an unusual combination that encourages readers to use both their imaginations and serious inquiry in tandem. While this was a bit of a disappointment given the high quality first two books, I’m sure the series will get back on course in the next book.
