It is a near-future Toronto where the British Empire never fell. Victoria-Margaret is the crown princess of the Empire, hoping for a summer of freedom before an arranged marriage. She meets Helena, daughter of a geneticist, and August, heir to a shipping firm. The trio is caught off-guard by the discovery of a love so intense they are willing to change the course of the monarchy to keep it.

Okay submitted by zmclaugh on August 1, 2018, 5:28pm An interesting premise, but I didn't really connect with the characters and found the romance unbelievable.

Subtle Brilliance submitted by lcbuday on August 19, 2018, 1:42pm I cannot fully express all of my feelings about this book without spoiling the (amazing) ending, so I'm just going to quote from one of my favorite moments:
"The stories always seem to leave out the part about how much work love is," Helena said. "Lack of imagination, I guess," Margaret said. "It's much easier to just end on a high note. But the work is worthwhile, more than, I'd say."
Not only is this a lovely sentiment that captures the heart of this novel, it's also a great way to sum up the novel itself- "That Inevitable Victorian Thing" certainly doesn't lack for imagination, and it does hard work to tell a story that is unexpected, tender, realistic, and beautiful.
