Grown up Fairlytales submitted by rachelmcglash on June 17, 2018, 9:17am These short stories were wonderful. Well written and appropriate for younger readers, but still with an edge. They are quick reads too. I was able to read each in one short sitting.

Great collection submitted by irksit on June 21, 2018, 8:13am I loved these stories and the book is so beautiful! I like it so much I want to buy my own copy. My first Leigh Bardugo and definitely not my last!

Greatly Enjoyed submitted by www.net on July 22, 2018, 10:45am I loved the way these stories challenged fairy tales, and can't wait to reread this book. Also, the pictures are amazing.

Good submitted by zmclaugh on June 27, 2019, 10:14pm I don't know what series this is connected to, but I enjoyed these stories on their own, especially the Nutcracker retelling.

If you need a fix submitted by terpsichore17 on June 21, 2022, 12:38pm I said I was done with Bardugo, but I lied. That said, since these stories are fairly short, they feel like they have the appropriate depth.

Of the 6 stories, I would most recommend "Ayama and the Thorn Wood" and "When Water Sang Fire;" the former is both moving and satisfying, while the latter provides an interesting twist/prequel to a familiar children's story.

As for the others: there's something distressing about the sort of turn that the Ravkan stories and "The Soldier Prince" take. Maybe if I read them straight after Perrault or something, this would bug me less? Uncertain.
