COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Somewhat Limited; More Survey Than Synthesis submitted by Meginator on July 3, 2018, 7:38pm This book does provide a history of LGBTQ+ people in the music industry, but its scope feels surprisingly limited with is heavy focus on pop and rock in the United States and Great Britain. Despite efforts to the contrary, the book often reads more like a survey than a critical analysis, and it can be difficult to keep up with the names as they roll past without a lot of context. Moreover, the book is plagued with non sequiturs that can make reading a chore. Bullock also struggles a bit with his depictions of transgender individuals: his naming conventions are confusing at best and transphobic at worst and he does little to elaborate on the distinctions between crossdressing performers and transgender performers. This book may be a good place to start when looking at the history of queer musicians and queer music, but some significant gaps and missteps leave plenty of work to be done.
