A Great Companion for a Re-Watch submitted by Meginator on August 11, 2021, 4:46pm This book collects Alan Sepinwall’s individual essays on each episode of Breaking Bad, originally written during the show’s initial run and later edited for clarity. Although Sepinwall avoids spoilers, this book will be best appreciated by viewers who have previously seen the entire series, and because Sepinwall refers indirectly to many minor plot points I recommend reading along as you watch (or being ready to consult the internet for more traditional plot recaps). I wish that the book included more retrospective essays that take the entire series into account (especially about the more toxic elements of its fandom), but Sepinwall does a good job of covering multiple aspects of its production and impact, covering everything from cinematography to the deep character development that drives so much of the show’s emotional impact. This is a must-read for “Breaking Bad” fans, or anyone who wants to learn more about what, exactly, makes a television show a contender for the GOAT.
