In Harlem in the 1920s, in the middle of a family Christmas party, Marie receives a nutcracker from her Uncle Cab, which leads to a marvelous dream in this resetting of E.T.A. Hoffmann's familiar tale. Includes historical notes.

Great Art, Confusing Timeline submitted by Meginator on August 27, 2022, 6:19pm I love the artistic style of the illustrations in this book, which bring the story’s Harlem Renaissance setting to life, but I ultimately found the plot to be somewhat disorienting and confusing. The book follows a young girl who lacks confidence in her musical abilities, eventually finding her own inspiration after a dreamtime adventure in a scene inspired by the Nutcracker ballet. In the end, the main character seems to move about the house without explanation, falling asleep in one place and waking up in another, and the timeline isn’t entirely clear: does the story take place over the course of a single evening, or does it take the amount of time it seems to?
