Illustrations enhance the tale submitted by camelsamba on June 24, 2023, 3:49pm The premise in a nutshell: Mark Twain used to tell bedtime stories to his daughters; he never wrote them down but did keep notes for a few weeks. These notes were found in his papers and (local author!) Phillip Stead was asked to turn them into a book. (He is also one of the narrators of the audiobook.)

I originally listened to the audiobook version. After I heard a description of the illustration techniques used by Erin Stead (also in that editor's note), I decided to borrow the print edition - and I’m so glad I did! There were aspects of the audiobook that made it hard to follow at times; those are clarified when holding the book. And the illustrations are lovely! Erin Stead’s colored pencil drawings have a serene quality to them that really enhance the tale. (The weasel on page 131 - cute beyond words!) The story itself follows a familiar arc, but has enough unique elements to make it entertaining.
