"A gentle Eastern European immigrant arrives in New York City after his family and his life have been torn apart by his country's civil war. A man who loves to bowl rolls a perfect game--and then another and then another and then many more in a row until he winds up ESPN's newest celebrity, and he must decide if the combination of perfection and celebrity has ruined the thing he loves. An eccentric billionaire and his faithful executive assistant venture into America looking for acquisitions and discover a down and out motel, romance, and a bit of real life. These are just some of the tales Tom Hanks tells in this first collection of his short stories. They are surprising, intelligent, heartwarming, and, for the millions and millions of Tom Hanks fans, an absolute must-have!"--Publisher annotation.

Really good! submitted by Zekicmom on August 5, 2018, 8:13am I have to admit, one of the reasons I wanted to read this book in the first place was because I was curious about what Tom Hanks would be like as an author. I'm happy to say that "Uncommon Type", is a very good read. Each of the stories is unique and captivating. There are a few stories that revisit characters from a previous one, and I was glad to see them. Typewriters are the common thread that weave the stories together, and found myself wondering if the author used one when writing this book. Bottom line - I enjoyed the book and would recomend it to a friend.

Personality shines through submitted by rskwon on August 19, 2020, 10:24pm The best thing about this collection of stories is that Tom Hanks’ charm shines through the stories. You can almost hear his voice reading to you.
Must listen to the audiobook of this submitted by A2AE on June 30, 2022, 11:07am With Hanks reading his own stories, which have the common theme (even loosely at times) of a typewriter, why not? His voice. Is. Everything.
