"Aster has little to offer folks in the way of rebuttal when they call her ogre and freak. She's used to the names; she only wishes there was more truth to them. If she were truly a monster, she'd be powerful enough to tear down the walls around her until nothing remains of her world. Aster lives in the lowdeck slums of the HSS Matilda, a space vessel organized much like the antebellum South. For generations, Matilda has ferried the last of humanity to a mythical Promised Land. On its way, the ship's leaders have imposed harsh moral restrictions and deep indignities on dark-skinned sharecroppers like Aster. Embroiled in a grudge with a brutal overseer, Aster learns there may be a way to improve her lot--if she's willing to sow the seeds of civil war"--Page 4 of cover.

This book was unexpected submitted by Susan4Pax -prev. sueij- on June 22, 2019, 3:33pm An excellent debut novel with a creative setting, a most unique main character, a compelling set of secondary characters, and a wonderful plot. Set on a spaceship with a highly stratified racist society, Aster has always been considered odd. She has carved out a place for herself as a medic, but has been the target of vicious powerful men. Her desire to solve the mystery of her mother’s life and disappearance, along with her relationship with the ship’s general surgeon, provided a story that I could not put down. This book was unexpected, which is great praise indeed. Highly recommended.

LOVED IT! submitted by Jinxyluis on August 21, 2019, 11:37am There were like half a dozen plot points which didn’t fit cohesively into the frame of the narrative for me, but I still loved this book completely and utterly. I was charmed by Aster, and loved seeing the world of Matilda through her eyes. This book decisively confronts racism and the power systems which support it, as well as exploring concepts of sexuality and gender, and Solomon shines in these aspects. Matilda is an expertly developed setting, with its own cosmology and religions, social striations, rules, languages, myths, legends, and history. Even if the plot left me a little confused at times, I was propelled through this book and my brain loved it. Solomon is brilliant, and I’m so looking forward to reading more of their creative storytelling and what they have to say. ⁣

A Wonderful Debut submitted by stephaniepocsimorrison on June 15, 2021, 2:26pm Rivers Solomon has a wonderful career ahead of them and it started with this book. I loved this read so much I have suggested it to anyone and everyone who has asked me for a book rec. I am grateful to see a depiction of neuro-divergent people in a futuristic sci-fi book and I am excited for the representation of complex ideas and problems that this book presents. Please read it and let it simmer in your head- I promise it'll be worth it!

I loved the creative storytelling, was very charmed by Aster and appreciated the diversity of characters and the uniqueness of the plot. I love that Solomon explores complex ideas, political systems and philosophies. I love that it ended in hope.
