"There is a dark secret that is hiding at the heart of New York City and diminishing the city's magicians' power in this fantasy thriller by acclaimed author Kat Howard. In New York City, magic controls everything. But the power of magic is fading. No one knows what is happening, except for Sydney--a new, rare magician with incredible power that has been unmatched in decades, and she may be the only person who is able to stop the darkness that is weakening the magic. But Sydney doesn't want to help the system, she wants to destroy it. Sydney comes from the House of Shadows, which controls the magic with the help of sacrifices from magicians"-- Provided by publisher.

Dark submitted by Princess Cimorene on July 21, 2020, 1:22am This was the first book I read by this author, and it remains my favorite of hers. The magic here has such a cruel edge, which makes it dark and gritty while still being kind of poetic. Not my favorite book, but worth a read if you like fantasy with high stakes.
Could have used five more minutes in the oven but still good submitted by mintaroni on July 5, 2022, 5:52pm Great ideas and plot but the execution could have been slightly better. Lots of build up for events that sped by with very little pay off. Did genuinely feel this was a cool world and plot and would recommend it for someone who wants gritty modern magic, it just feels underdeveloped in the writing and world.
