In this humorous version of the traditional tale, Jack's magic beanstalk produces so many beans that soon everyone in the village is sick of eating them, and mad at Jack, and when he climbs the beanstalk he finds that Mr. Giant is equally fed up with beans-- but fortunately Mrs. Giant suggests a solution to their diet problem.

Slightly Twisted Fairy Tale submitted by Meginator on July 30, 2019, 11:55pm Despite its plot twist of a title, this book sticks fairly closely to the established Jack and the Beanstalk storyline, with a humorous emphasis on the practical effects of a giant beanstalk (most notably, a surplus of beans). The illustrations are excellent and play up a traditional fairy tale vibe (Jack’s cow has a brilliant deadpan expression at one memorable moment), but a few of them don’t quite match up to the accompanying text; this caused me to miss a couple of plot points. Some of the jokes didn’t quite land for me either, and I feel like the book could have benefited from a stronger editorial hand. Overall, Mark Teague does just enough to breathe a little new life into a time-worn tale, even if the results aren’t as innovative as the title and jacket copy suggest.
