"The Home Place is a remarkable meditation on nature and belonging. This is at once a deeply moving memoir and a riveting exploration of the contradictions of black identity in the rural South -- and in America today." -- Inside cover.

Truly unique submitted by eileenth on June 29, 2018, 9:00am Fascinating memoir. A unique combination of recollections of childhood, issues of race and identity, and nature and ecology. Truly unique.

Beautiful and Smart submitted by sdunav on July 6, 2018, 9:51am This is a beautiful, thoughtful book in so many ways. It's a wonderful memoir about growing up on a small farm in South Carolina. It's an intimate examination of the land and history of the piedmont region, between the mountains and the sea, with many perceptive insights into race and racism and ecology and land ethics and birds and belonging. Read it, especially if you have recently read Jesym Ward's "Sing, Unburied, Sing"

Touching recount of a man’s family and heritage submitted by timbresson on August 13, 2023, 11:20am It’s always good to be reminded of where (and when) you came from. The US has changed so much over the past 100 years - and those are the generations of our parents, grandparents. This book does a good job of putting that into perspective from a racial history.
