COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Extensive Architectural History of Detroit submitted by apf1950 on December 28, 2022, 10:57am I read Ferry's THE BUILDINGS OF DETROIT and Michael Smith's DESIGNING DETROIT back to back. Ferry originally published his book in 1968. It has dozens of B&W photos and a locator map. He tries to place different eras in historical perspective, but it ends up being quite dull. There's a lot of emphasis on industrial design and mansions. Smith was published in 2017 and seems more thorough, even digging into blueprints and plans for projects. He includes many color diagrams and photos. His research focuses on a range of figures, especially Wirt Rowland, who worked for "Albert Khan, Architects and Engineers." This details the extent to which various designers, not Khan all by himself, had a major impact on Detroit.
