All pet owners should read this! submitted by bookher on June 16, 2017, 2:11pm I've read many books on animal behavior over the years but I really have to appreciate Jon Katz's consideration from the animals' perspective. Too many animal rights movements and activists get caught up in dramatic human emotions that have little to do with what the animals are really experiencing and really need. His writing and study of the NYC carriage horses was especially enlightening. Animals need humans as much as we need them. Very good book!
Did not like this book. submitted by snabbleon on June 22, 2017, 2:25pm This book was very disappointing. The author told stories and anecdotes to rationalize the use and abuse of animals as long as one did it "respectfully". Enjoy "talking" to a steer? Great! When you're done with him, send him to slaughter. He will understand. After all, animals are not humans and we can decide when and how they are to live and die. They are here to serve us and have value only because they are of use to humans. Total garbage. There was nothing charming, useful or interesting about this book.
Katz' farm

I like this fellow. He reveres animals, feels that they can bring insight to our lives by seeing things from their perspective. He's humble too, to admit his times when he manifested his dream of a farm with animals you'd expect
on a farm but treated unfairly. But he acknowledges times when he lost sight of that mutual respect, overcrowded his life with too many. I think he's showing us the roles we assign our pets, make their lives as we see them, a bucolic happy little vision, but subvert their happiness when 'necessary'. A wrenching chapter on letting an old pet die 'naturally' because we want them to stay with us longer or listening to the animal tell us goodbye.
