Interesting But Dense submitted by Meginator on August 2, 2017, 10:15am I appreciate James Kakalios's intent in writing an introduction to the physics of everyday life in an accessible manner, but I found The Physics of Everday Things to be a bit dense and certainly beyond the introductory level. My vague memory of high school chemistry and physics courses, and some more recent supplementary leisure reading related to these topics, came in handy throughout the book, but I still found myself lost often, re-reading passages several times before either figuring out what they meant or deciding to move on. My experience of this book is thus hit or miss, depending on how easily I could grasp a specific concept. The book relies heavily on explanations of electricity, energy, and material science and operates primarily on a micro, rather than macro scale; other than an excellent (and easily comprehensible) explanation of what keeps airplanes aloft, most of the text deals with consumer electronics. The Physics of Everyday Things presents some interesting food for thought, but the finer points may be too technical for many readers.
