Clever Conceit submitted by Meginator on July 11, 2021, 12:19pm This is a high-concept picture book that expands the familiar joke into a hardboiled noir tale of perfidy and intrigue. Some of the stylistic jokes will go over young readers’ heads, but the tone is precisely right for the genre and makes for a good laugh with anyone familiar with noir in its more adult-oriented iterations. The story itself cycles through several numbers and a couple of letters, though some of the puns don’t quite work out mathematically (9 can, for example, be evenly divided into integers despite a certain assumption by 7). This isn’t entirely successful, but it’s definitely good for a laugh or two and number-loving readers will enjoy it a lot.
