As World War I raged across the globe, hundreds of young women toiled away at the radium-dial factories, where they painted clock faces with a mysterious new substance called radium. Assured by their bosses that the luminous material was safe, the women themselves shone brightly in the dark, covered from head to toe with the glowing dust. With such a coveted job, these zshining girlsy were considered the luckiest alive--until they began to fall mysteriously ill. As the fatal poison of the radium took hold, they found themselves embroiled in one of America's biggest scandals and a groundbreaking battle for worker rights. The Radium Girls explores the strength of extraordinary women in the face of almost impossible circumstances and the astonishing legacy they left behind.

An Incredible Tale submitted by diana_kimball on August 23, 2018, 8:43pm Radium Girls is the fascinating true story of how young women who worked at painting radium on dials used in WWII aircraft, watches, etc. and suffered the horrendous effects of radium exposure.

A tale of how these women fought against large companies who denied there were any ill effects from radium exposure. Important legislation and public health findings were a result of these women who stood up for their health rights.

Riveting and (*ahem*) Illuminating submitted by granumm on July 13, 2019, 9:28am This book was fascinating and heartwrenching. If you're interested in labor reform, medical oddities, or feminist history, you will be gripped by this story.

Interesting, and an *easier* read submitted by dgutie26 on July 21, 2020, 3:32pm So far I've only read a few chapters, but it's captivated me nonetheless. As someone who has difficulty reading for long periods of time and finishing books, I find Kate Moore's writing to be accessible, captivating, and most importantly, informative. I'm looking forward to continue learning about the Radium Girls

Loved this book submitted by Susan4Pax -prev. sueij- on June 16, 2021, 8:38pm I love non-fiction books that tell stories as compellingly as fiction works can and do. _Radium Girls_ achieves that in spades, juxtaposing the personal stories of the young women who worked in several dial painting “studios” with the larger societal and scientific context of radium, workplace safety, and the Great Depression. The women’s stories are horrific, their fight inspirational, and the outcome of their battle still resonates today.
