"Twin sisters Jack and Jill were seventeen when they found their way home and were packed off to Eleanor West's Home for Wayward Children ... Jacqueline was her mother's perfect daughter--polite and quiet, always dressed as a princess. If her mother was sometimes a little strict, it's because crafting the perfect daughter takes discipline. Jillian was her father's perfect daughter--adventurous, thrill-seeking, and a bit of a tom-boy. He really would have preferred a son, but you work with what you've got. They were five when they learned that grown-ups can't be trusted. They were twelve when they walked down the impossible staircase and discovered that the pretense of love can never be enough to prepare you a life filled with magic in a land filled with mad scientists and death and choices."-- Dust jacket flap.

Heartbreaking and Brilliant submitted by Meginator on June 26, 2017, 7:24am This is a standalone prequel to "Every Heart a Doorway" and, while it's quite different in tone, it's just as good. The story follows identical twins Jack and Jill as they follow a portal to the Moors, where their paths dramatically, and fatally, diverge. This is a deep-cutting character study that showcases McGuire's many talents and will stick with you once it's done. McGuire clearly loves the many genres she lovingly references here, yet her tribute is entirely original, entirely new. Not to be missed, but be warned that there is some violence.

Seanan McGuire is the best submitted by basketcasemom on August 4, 2017, 7:44pm This is the usual 5 star creation by Seanan McGuire. Warning: Chronologically, this story is a prequel to the 2016 published "Every Heart a Doorway", but you should read it after EHaD to avoid spoilers.

A+ submitted by Judeyblu on July 4, 2018, 10:33am
2nd in the Wayward Children series, and I can't wait to read the third.
Fantasy with a creepy edge.
Think short novels with Neil Gaiman as their uncle.
Good bridge from YA, and for anyone looking to try something different.

Beautifully told dark fairy tale submitted by Jinxyluis on July 24, 2018, 8:39am I love Seanen McGuire's writing, I loved the setting and getting to know the characters better.

Wayward Children Continue to Dazzle submitted by lcbuday on August 19, 2018, 2:16pm This was just as excellent as the first book, if not even better. A brutal and stunning insight into Jack and Jill and why they are the way they are... when I read "Every Heart A Doorway" I didn't fully understand their dynamic or their desire to return to the Moors (particularly on Jack's part), but "Down Among the Sticks and Bones" answered all of my questions and then some, all in striking and brilliant prose.

My Favorite of the Wayward Children Series to Date submitted by Cassildra on June 13, 2021, 8:40pm Okay, so I'm a sucker for a good Gothic Horror. This book delivers that and more--just so much goodness here. I can't explain it very well, but the way it continues Jack and Jill's stories so well and explains their motivations in greater detail just makes me happy.

I love the Moors, I love the characters, and I love how Seanan McGuire writes.
