"From the New York Times bestselling author of A Man Called Ove, My Grandmother Asked Me To Tell You She's Sorry, and Britt-Marie Was Here, comes a poignant, charming novel about a forgotten town fractured by scandal, and the amateur hockey team that might just change everything. Winning a junior ice hockey championship might not mean a lot to the average person, but it means everything to the residents of Beartown, a community slowly being eaten alive by unemployment and the surrounding wilderness. A victory like this would draw national attention to the ailing town: it could attract government funding and an influx of talented athletes who would choose Beartown over the big nearby cities. A victory like this would certainly mean everything to Amat, a short, scrawny teenager who is treated like an outcast everywhere but on the ice; to Kevin, a star player just on the cusp of securing his golden future in the NHL; and to Peter, their dedicated general manager whose own professional hockey career ended in tragedy. At first, it seems like the team might have a shot at fulfilling the dreams of their entire town. But one night at a drunken celebration following a key win, something happens between Kevin and the general manager's daughter--and the next day everything seems to have changed. Accusations are made and, like ripples on a pond, they travel through all of Beartown, leaving no resident unaffected. With so much riding on the success of the team, the line between loyalty and betrayal becomes difficult to discern. At last, it falls to one young man to find the courage to speak the truth that it seems no one else wants to hear. Fredrik Backman knows that we are forever shaped by the places we call home, and in this emotionally powerful, sweetly insightful story, he explores what can happen when we carry the heavy weight of other people's dreams on our shoulders"-- Provided by publisher.

COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Not the same submitted by cldaniels on July 4, 2017, 12:02pm Although I enjoyed this book, it is not the same as others the author is known for. Instead of endearing misfits coming together as a community, this one centers around a small community of stereotypes trying to stay together.

In one word: Phenomenal submitted by sburch46 on September 27, 2017, 8:35am This book blew me away! Never before have I encountered characters whose flaws and emotions are portrayed so raw and unflinching honest. The story of how the fate of a town rests on the shoulders of a youth hockey team. And yet the alternative narratives throughout the book kept me guessing. Even though I knew something terrible was going to happen, living alongside the characters as it occurred and the fall out from it, was heartbreaking and truly enthralling. I Highly recommend!

Great book even if it was totally predictable. submitted by bookher on August 1, 2018, 3:14pm It's a story that, sadly, is portrayed over and over but I loved the humanness of all these unique characters. Enjoyable read and I look forward to Part II which just came out.

great book - cant wait to read sequel submitted by laurenalysse on August 16, 2018, 4:31pm I enjoyed this book very much! I'm excited to read the next book in the series to find out what happens next to the characters.

The story was somewhat predictable, but I enjoyed the character development.

Missoula is a non-fiction book if you enjoyed this one.

I'm not a hockey fan submitted by tbbrown76 on July 15, 2019, 10:52pm But, I loved this book. Great story, but some difficult parts were a bit unpalatable. Not for kids, maybe teens. For all hockey fans.

Like it submitted by ilenekroll on August 18, 2021, 3:24pm I was a little disappointed in the ending but still a great read

Beartown submitted by pamhockey25 on July 26, 2023, 2:04pm This is the first of a three-part series. Beartown takes place in a very small, very cold hockey-loving town in Sweden. The town is united in their hope that the Junior boy's team will win a tournament and bring commerce back to their town. One player is outstanding, Kevin, 17, who has been dedicated to his sport since birth. He is wealthy, but neglected by his parents. One night after a big win, they leave him home alone, and he throws a party where he ends up raping the 15-year-old daughter of the rink's General Manager. This book explores the repercussions of his actions.

Beartown submitted by cjflory on August 11, 2023, 10:10pm This has become one of my favorite books! The character development is great and it manages to tie all of their storylines together in a very heartfelt and telling way. Even if you have no interest in hockey, this book may still be for you.

Didn't leave me wanting to read the others submitted by hannahrice on August 22, 2023, 3:48pm I love Fredrik Backman's work, but Beartown was a bit of a let down. I had a hard time finishing it, whereas I couldn't put some of his other books down. It felt a bit like something I might have gotten sucked into when I was in my late teens, but not so much now as an adult.
