Off-the-wall but profoundly moving

I expected this book to be an introduction and conclusion sandwiching a bunch of poems composed by students. It turns out to be richer and deeper than that: Mr. Pete embodies the InsideOut Literary Project by teaching the purpose of poetry instead of merely defining terms or counting meters (though he knows those too, knows old and new poems, classics that get brought into class for tasting and chewing). Nowhere is his goal more evident than in the students who are hardest to reach, because they have suffered the most: the Boy with the Blind Third Eye, the Nothing Beautiful girl.
This is more about his teaching method and the child's manner of regarding the world, but that regard begets interesting images and novel turns of phrase.
Full disclosure: made me cry a lot.
