Lovelace was once merely a ship's artificial intelligence. When she wakes up in an new body, following a total system shut-down and reboot, she has to start over in a synthetic body, in a world where her kind are illegal. She's never felt so alone. But she's not alone, not really. Pepper, one of the engineers who risked life and limb to reinstall Lovelace, is determined to help her adjust to her new world. Because Pepper knows a thing or two about starting over. Together, Pepper and Lovey will discover that, huge as the galaxy may be, it's anything but empty.

Finding identity submitted by klaw197 on June 16, 2017, 7:48pm I wasn't sure I wanted a story about "ancillary characters", but this was a really nice tale of finding identity and the characters are well written and easy to care about.

Good follow-up to the first book submitted by Princess Cimorene on July 20, 2020, 11:21pm I love scifi with a happy ending! I also like how Chambers took characters I wasn't as invested in from the first book in the series and made me love them. I also liked the narrative structure of the book.

Compelling submitted by Susan4Pax -prev. sueij- on June 12, 2022, 12:27pm I thoroughly enjoyed both storylines in this novel. The history of young Jane was compelling to me right from the start, and Sidra’s started a bit slower for me and really picked up when she met Tak, yet the *questions* her life and story engendered were interesting all the way through. (Yes, I’m being vague, but the story behind each character gives away a lot of the plot, so I’ll let either the book blurb or reading the book itself give the content away.) Basically, I kept wanting to pick this book up, and isn’t that what it’s all about?

Lovely submitted by giffinka on August 26, 2022, 2:38pm This book was just lovely. I got very invested in both storylines– and I don't normally like books that have multiple perspectives! Becky Chamber's biggest strength is her characters, and she has created some very compelling characters in this one. I thought that I would miss the characters and story from the first book, but by the end I was just happy to have spent time with the new characters.
