Neil Gaiman has long been inspired by ancient mythology in creating the fantastical realms of his fiction. Now he presents his fashioning of the primeval Norse myths into a novel, which begins with the genesis of the legendary nine worlds, delves into the exploits of the deities, dwarves, and giants, and culminates in Ragnarok, the twilight of the gods and the rebirth of a new time and people. Gaiman stays true to the myths while vividly recreating the characters--the gods with their fiercely competitive natures, their susceptibility to being duped and to dupe others, and their tendencey to let passion ignite their actions--and making these long-ago myths breathe pungent life again.-- adapted from author website.

Kept My Interest submitted by GJBarnett2 on July 12, 2017, 9:22pm An updated and very readable compendium of Norse mythology, just as advertised.

devoured submitted by jessNU on July 27, 2018, 11:51pm All of Gaiman's books are amazing and this one does not disappoint. Soon you will be reading all of his works.

Norse Mythology submitted by lstorc on August 6, 2018, 4:24am This was lacking the imagine of qualities the author witnessed in other books

Quick interesting read submitted by heheaton on July 24, 2019, 7:24pm A nice easily readable take on Norse mythology!

Accessible to a modern audience submitted by Jen Chapin-Smith on June 24, 2022, 11:16am With "Norse Mythology," Neil Gaiman tells the story of the Norse Gods, but in the style of short stories. This makes the read much more accessible to modern audiences. Because these are ancient Scandinavian stories, they do contain some disturbing elements, such as violence.
In many ways, this book dovetails well with "American Gods," also by Gaiman. Fans of Marvel comics and movies about Thor and his family will also appreciate this book.

Great intro to Norse Mythology submitted by ajh on July 12, 2023, 5:20pm Gaiman is a phenomenal writer and storyteller. It's so fun when he uses his very good storytelling skills to address something already in the record. This will make you want to go find and read his primary sources
