Covering everything from the process of choosing a breed to caring for, training, and even showing your new canine companion, the book offers useful, honest advice that acknowledges both the amount of work inherent in owning a dog and the rich potential rewards of bringing them into your home (and heart). Though the author’s focus on showing dogs feels a little misplaced for a beginner’s guide, the text is clear and accessible, allowing readers with varying levels of experience to better understand many aspects of dog ownership. I recommend this personable, yet no-nonsense, guide for anyone apprehensive about getting a dog; it may not be exhaustive on every subject, but it’s a good primer and a good initial reference book that will put many minds at ease during those first few weeks and months with their new dogs.
