I *really* enjoyed this book, and flew through it. Connie Willis is a masterful storyteller, with characters who live and breathe and fly off the pages. There's the doc who carries food in his pockets, the narcissist who always wants to talk about his work and who everyone avoids, the little girl who will do anything to delay people leaving her room. They are living, breathing people to me after 750 glorious pages in their world. The worlds Willis writes have depth and breadth and width and are well-rounded with just enough detail to feel like you are really there (like a hospital where somebody paints a stairwell and forgets to take down the wet paint signs). And the story! Ohhhhh, the story. A fascinating exploration of Near Death Experiences, why they happen, and whether science can figure them out.
I was completely enamored of this book. It's long, but it reads so easily. I highly recommend it.
