When listeners last heard Maisie Dobbs, it was 1938, and the world was on the brink of war. Maisie herself was on a dangerous mission inside Nazi Germany, where she encountered an old enemy and the Fuhrer himself. In In This Grave Hour, a year has passed, and Maisie is back home in England - yet neither she nor her nation is safe. Britain has just declared war on Germany and is mobilizing for the devastating battle ahead. But when she stumbles on the deaths of a group of refugees, Maisie suspects the enemy may be closer than anyone knows.

Another good Maisie Dobbs read submitted by teri on June 18, 2018, 11:58pm Winspear does a fine job capturing the mood in England, on the cusp of WWII. It's a good mystery, but the historical atmosphere and issues of the day are just as interesting as the mystery itself.
Maisie Dobbs continues to be a strong character - perhaps mellowed a bit by time.

WW2 begins submitted by camelsamba on July 2, 2023, 9:24pm World War 2 is just beginning, and London is on edge. Maisie is called upon to investigate the death of a Belgian WW1 refugee. The police ascribe it to theft gone wrong, but it’s only the beginning of a series of similar deaths. I had a fairly good sense of who did it, at least a general sense of the kind of person, and a general sense of why, but not the specifics.

This book is also the beginning of a side plot about Anna, a young selectively-mute London evacuee child. While Maisie is working on solving the murders, she is also trying to figure out Anna's back story. That element is quite satisfying.
