Did you know that your answers to just a handful of questions can predict the zip code of where you grew up? In 2013, Josh Katz accumulated and visually mapped over 350,000 unique survey responses to questions about word choice and pronunciation throughout America. His dialect quiz quickly became the most viewed webpage in the history of the New York Times. In Speaking American, Katz offers a visual atlas of the American vernacular -- who says what, and where they say it -- revealing the history of our nation, our regions, and our language.

Great for those who love dialect! submitted by pk on August 27, 2020, 7:46pm If you enjoy learning about accent, dialect, and all those little differences that make language fun, this book is for you. While it doesn't have ALL of the regional differences of American English, it hits a lot of them. Differences by region, obviously, and even more interesting, differences by birth year of speaker. Fascinating! The author does not attempt to explain WHY any of these regional/time differences exist, but the large color maps are just plain fun to look at. A simple, 'coffee table' style book that lets you know just who thinks "cole slaw" can be shortened to "slaw", and many more.
