Companion book to Graceling and Fire.
Eighteen-year-old Bitterblue, queen of Monsea, realizes her heavy responsibility and the futility of relying on advisors who surround her with lies as she tries to help her people to heal from the thirty-five-year spell cast by her father, a violent psychopath with mind-altering abilities.

Great submitted by Memoria1224 on August 28, 2012, 4:19pm This book is really good! It has a lot of adventure and suspense in it. The plot is really good too.

Great, but younger reader warning submitted by clessure on July 23, 2013, 6:43pm I really enjoyed the book. But, I am going to suggest that my 11 year old child wait a few years to read this one. The story includes some, dark disturbing stuff (sadism, rape, self-harm) and the characters grapple with it in a thoughtful way, but it is dark stuff much more so than Cashore's "Graceling." I thought I'd warn other middle school readers and their parents that it may not be appropriate for all readers exploring the young adult section.

Great! submitted by ekrieger on August 6, 2023, 10:41am This installment in Cashore’s Graceling series tackles the political side of things as Bitterblue, a young queen, learns how to run a kingdom and begin to repair the damages left by her father, the former king. A number of great new characters are introduced, as well as appearances from characters in previous books. A warning for younger readers - this book does contain dark/nature elements such as discussion of rape, human experimentation, and self-harm. Although the book has its dark moments, I found the end to be very satisfying!
