Surprisingly Broad Scope submitted by Meginator on August 27, 2022, 7:19pm This book is a solid companion to the relevant Magic Tree House adventure and also a decent entry-level history of Ancient Egypt for slightly more advanced readers. The authors do place heavy emphasis on the Ancient Egyptians’ views of death and funeral rituals, but, unlike many other histories of the era for this age group, the book also covers some aspects of daily life and even explains why this civilization appeared where and when it did. While they do recount the uniting of the two kingdoms that began the age of “Ancient Egypt” as we commonly think of it, they do depict the civilization’s thousands of years of history as a monolithic culture; however, this is depressingly common and alone probably doesn’t discount all of the book’s potential merit. The authors probably should have left out the section on tomb robbers, given that they condemn ancient robbers’ actions while later celebrating Lord Carnarvon’s (re)discovery of Tutankhamen’s tomb and providing readers with a list of relevant museum collections in the United States, but I don’t expect that most readers will pick up on this even if they are beyond the target audience’s age. Altogether, this is a surprisingly comprehensive (for its size and scope) history of the period.
