Let me say right off the bat that I enjoyed this read immensely. I love poetry in virtually all forms, and find epic poems like this especially fascinating. Mitchell’s translation flowed well, and in my opinion he did a fantastic job preserving poetic elements while still making it readable.
The story itself is engaging on several levels - as a straight-forward read, with little interpretation or analysis, it’s quite a fun trip. I found myself relating Enkidu and Gilgamesh’s adventures to several friends because I enjoyed it so much. But it’s also chock-full of interesting themes, symbols, and allegories, which better scholars than me are still wrestling with - death and man’s mortality is of course central to the plot, but I was also struck by the tension between civilisation and nature, which first crops up with the taming of Enkidu.
Not my favorite submitted by thesrays on August 25, 2019, 7:29pm While this is readable, Mitchell took too many liberties with the plotline for this to be a translation.
