The Skating Revolution As It Happened submitted by Meginator on August 11, 2021, 5:16pm You can’t come closer than these article and photographs when looking at the history of the Dogtown skate culture that paved the way for modern skateboarding as we know it. Stecyk’s articles use a lot of insider language and have a loose, stream-of-consciousness vibe that makes more sense if you’re already familiar with the time period, but Friedman’s photographs clearly show early innovations in skating banks, pools, and, eventually, rickety handmade proto-vert ramps. This book is a must for anyone interested in learning about the history of skateboarding from those who were there as it happened, but the same raw energy that makes it such a valuable artifact of the period means that it’s not the most accessible place to start.
