Tragedy has struck His Majesty's Aerial Corps, as an epidemic of unknown origin and no known cure is decimating the dragons' ranks. Only Temeraire and a pack of newly recruited dragons remain uninfected and must stand as the only means of airborne defense against France's ever bolder sorties. As Bonaparte's dragons harrow Britain's ships, Temeraire and his captain, Will Laurence, take wing to Africa in search of a cure for the deadly contagion.

Ties with the first book for my favorite in the series submitted by Susan4Pax -prev. sueij- on July 15, 2017, 8:40pm The 4th of 9 books in the Temeraire series, this one takes us to Africa, deals with the Abolition movement in Britain, looks solidly at colonization, and develops the storyline wherein Temeraire knows himself to be a free and thinking creature with rights, and tries to work out how to get Britain to honor them. The widely varied angles on slavery (British abolitionists, a Navy captain whose family are slavers, African natives who have had family stolen, Temeraire who is working out what dragon rights should be, and others) and the ways these worked naturally into the storyline were one of my favorite parts of the story... and as I loved the "find the cure for the sick dragons" baseline, this says a lot. I love that the main character Will Laurence grows throughout, rather than remain stagnant. So far this was probably my favorite book in the series (or maybe tied with the first that introduced the whole thing).
