A novel that spans fifty years. The Italian housekeeper and his long-lost American starlet; the producer who once brought them together, and his assistant. A glittering world filled with unforgettable characters.

Read this! submitted by monipate on June 27, 2013, 10:56pm The Additional Details section above pretty much covers it, but the thing I loved the most about this book is how well-written the characters are. Michael Deane sticks with you, as do others. The way the chapters are woven together is perfect for weaving the reader through and connecting the worlds into a really thoughtful and well-researched story.

Evocative of another time submitted by emilytrentacosta on August 12, 2013, 8:29am The different points of view in the book are what really make it special. I also enjoyed the descriptions of Italy - it made me want to book a trip there!

Didn't grab me submitted by Susan4Pax -prev. sueij- on June 26, 2014, 10:11am This one just didn't do a lot for me. It was a slice-of-life book alternately set in Italy and Hollywood, from the 1940's or '50's to the present.

I will say that it managed a vast number of characters and the time-jumping between chapters better than most books do.

But still... I just found a number of the characters to be fairly weak. The plot seemed thin. In the end, everything wrapped up too well. It just wasn't a book that grabbed me.

Enjoyed this book submitted by eisbruchs on June 18, 2019, 10:13pm Once I got into this book, I truly enjoyed it. The various stories come together at the end.

Lovely tale submitted by wendylv on June 23, 2021, 4:46pm This novel reminds you how easily seemingly small events can send your life down an entirely different path. There's some Old Hollywood glam, 1950's Italy, and modern LA all making an appearance in this well-crafted story. Delightful.

beautiful ruins submitted by maywang on June 26, 2021, 12:23pm Amazing book! Instantly got sucked into it after the plot develops.

Takes a little while to get started... submitted by avandeusen on July 17, 2021, 11:37am ...but then it captivates through the rest of the book!
