Originally published : 1997. With new epilogue.
In December 1937, the Japanese army swept into the ancient city of Nanking. Within weeks, more than 300,000 Chinese civilians and soldiers were systematically raped, tortured, and murdered a death toll exceeding that of the atomic blasts of Hiroshima and Nagasaki combined. Using extensive interviews with survivors and newly discovered documents, Iris Chang has written the definitive history of this horrifying episode.

Informative submitted by paserbamr on August 18, 2022, 10:58am Provides a detailed account of the often overlooked portion of WWII -- the Sino-Japanese war.
Haunting! submitted by kqliu on July 10, 2023, 3:30pm Terrifying emotional account by Iris Chang of the atrocities committed during the Nanjing massacre. Deeply disturbing accounts of torture and murder during the Japanese occupation of Nanjing. Iris' book helped revitalize conversations between historians (who are attempting to capture the full extent of the horrifying event) and denialists (who refute that the massacre never happened under the Japanese military or was at a much smaller scale).
