COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Lovable, A Little Sad, and That Title Doesn't Quite Fit submitted by Sara W on June 21, 2011, 2:59am Ida B is a very lovable character with a wonderful family and a great imagination. This book is an interesting look at the thought process of a creative and intensely loyal kid when changes interrupt their everyday routines.

Ida B is home schooled and has the run of her family's orchard with her faithful but slobbery sidekick, Rufus the dog. When Ida B's mom gets sick, Ida B has to deal with things she'd rather not - like the selling of some of their land and enrolling in public school. This story shows how she takes her parents' decisions and actions personally - and how she eventually learns to cope. It's a story about growing up, when the person doing it isn't quite ready and isn't quite willing.

Really Sad submitted by gracej on July 7, 2011, 5:16pm Ida B is a kid who loves to play in the orchard, sail boats in the creek, and most of all, have fun. Until her mother gets cancer, and her life changes rapidly.

"After Daddy left, I was hurting something terrible, like every single part of me was cut and torn up. But my heart hurt the most. I couldn't do anything except curl up like a ball on the floor of the barn and lie there crying. The kind of tears that burn your eyes, and the sort of sobs that make your chest ache so that you're sure it's going to bust open. And when the sobs finally ran out, the tears keep coming, so I just lay there with my mouth open, but I hardly make a sound. Just air going into me, and a heavy wind full of sorrow coming out. But as I cried, my heart was being transformed. It was getting smaller and smaller in my chest and hardening up like a rock. The smaller and harder my heart got, the less I cried, until finally I stopped completely."
- Ida B

She has to learn how to face the sadness, and it takes her a while to get it right.
I'm not trying to spoil the ending, but it doesn't end this sad, if that would stop you from reading the book.
