Life with Working Dogs submitted by sdunav on August 26, 2011, 4:35pm Quick reading, well-written memoir about a writer who moves to a farm in upstate NY, partially so he can have sheep for his Border collies. He has some interesting insights on "dog people" and why people turn to dogs for companionship, and what dogs can provide them with (and what they can't)
The Dogs of Bedlam Farm submitted by leighsprauer on August 22, 2015, 12:02pm I've never read any other of Katz' books, and I don't really consider myself a dog lover, but I thought this was a well-written, quick read. Like Katz, I have a not-so-secret desire to buy a working farm and train Border collies to herd. Unlike Katz, I haven't acted on this. I enjoyed his descriptions of his first year on his farm and his adventures training his dogs and becoming settled in his small town. Less enjoyable were his details about his psychological history and how he thought that affected his dog training. It was probably true and relevant, but it was just not that interesting. But maybe that's just because I'm not a 'dog person.'
