Wharton Spirit Possession Fail? submitted by torikaebaya on February 4, 2017, 11:12am Having read up to chapter 32, I find I can't go on. Edith Wharton possess true genius, but I'm afraid Marion Mainwaring's gifts lie in her biographical librarianship and keen interest in literary criticism... not in spirit possession. This is not to say I could have done a better job--rather that no one could, and probably no one should have. The plot points that arrive in the latter parts of the novel are well laid, and the characterization is maintained, but the writing style is entirely too modern and contrived (ie. "Let's start this paragraph with a runon... Oooh, and how about that one should start with a fragment!"). I am a little disturbed to think what Wharton would have thought if she were able to read it.
