Classy submitted by mansii on August 19, 2015, 9:16pm A collection of classy stories. They give you a thrill without having to be explicit or cheap.

Strange introductory article by Dahl on women's inferiority submitted by willow on April 16, 2016, 2:43pm Be aware that Dahl's lengthy introduction to this collection begins by discussing how many bad ghost stories there are, but how many good ones he found written by women. He appears to marvel at this, and we soon find out why: because (he says) women so rarely are good writers, or in fact good artists or musicians. I would hope any children inclined to read the ghost stories would skip this introduction, but be aware that if they do suffer through it, they will be treated to an earful on women's purported creative inferiority.

Strong collection of ghost stories: read it all, even the introduction submitted by MH17 on July 14, 2019, 3:13pm A well-curated selection of ghost stories that tend toward the literary, that is to say, character-driven, with psychological complexity. The best ones --"The Upper Berth" by Crawford, "Playmates" by Burrage, "Harry" by Timperley--are atmospheric and transport the reader effectively into the world of the story, creating an immersive experience. There are a few duds in the book that feel dated or too slight, but as a collection it's quite good and delivers some chills and thrills. The introduction is neither lengthy nor concerned with gendered inferiority but rather an inquiring, curious mind at work. Read it with a critical eye, don't skip it, make up your own mind.
