When novelist Owen Quine goes missing, his wife calls in private detective Cormoran Strike. At first, Mrs. Quine just thinks her husband has gone off by himself for a few days--as he has done before--and she wants Strike to find him and bring him home. But as Strike investigates, it becomes clear that there is more to Quine's disappearance than his wife realizes. The novelist has just completed a manuscript featuring poisonous pen-portraits of almost everyone he knows. If the novel were to be published, it would ruin lives--meaning that there are a lot of people who might want him silenced. When Quine is found brutally murdered under bizarre circumstances, it becomes a race against time to understand the motivation of a ruthless killer, a killer unlike any Strike has encountered before.

Mature writer submitted by kimaives on June 25, 2014, 8:33pm Even without knowing JK Rowling is the ghost writer of this book, you can tell it is written by a mature writer at the peak of their profession. The characters, settings, plot, etc are all finely detailed with a "film noir" feel to the whole book. The cohesiveness of the entire 455 pages is astonishing and does not drag on the reader as it moves from the start of the case to the unveiling of the murderer. I marveled at the complexity of the sentence structure, the specificity of the words and the use of words I have rarely, if ever, come across in all the books I have read. The main characters developed more fully and underwent some personal growth from "The Cuckoo's Calling". For once, I got to read a fictional, popular book that is not written on a juvenile level (Hunger Games, Twilight, etc) or contains a rerun of the other 20 novels that came before it (yeah, Evanovich, I'm talking about you!). I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and can't wait for the next one!

love it submitted by aparna70 on June 26, 2014, 5:17pm love the silkworm

Amazing submitted by pubudu on July 14, 2014, 9:55pm Another masterpiece by J.K. Rowling. It's a good book if you like to read about solving mysteries.

Delightfully Written submitted by audreyh on June 12, 2015, 2:17pm I was unsure of how I would feel about the Silkworm when I picked it up. By that point, JK Rowling had been outed as the author, so I knew it would most likely be a compelling read. What I did not expect was how well plotted the book turned out to be. JK Rowling masterfully ties all of the pieces of the puzzle together, while also giving astute readers who want to solve the mystery on their own a fair chance. Both Cormeran and Robin are fully realized characters that play off each other well. I credit this book with being one of my gateways into my obsession with mystery books.

Perfect submitted by Motomori on June 22, 2015, 12:06pm I loved the Cuckoos Calling, and this certainly was no disappointment!!!!!

Great submitted by leenajong on July 25, 2015, 2:48pm Love Comoran Strike series. Clever mystery!

Awesome submitted by nirmala on July 5, 2017, 9:06am Masterplot plot, as expected!

Great sequel submitted by beckyabondy on June 17, 2018, 10:54pm This is the 2nd book in a series and I enjoyed the mystery! It didn’t feel as huge of a reveal as the first but dirk enjoyable!

not my cup of tea submitted by camelsamba on June 22, 2019, 10:41pm The majority of mysteries that I read are of the "cozy" subtype. This is pretty far from a cozy, not just because the main character is an actual detective but also largely due to the means of death and Bombyx mori subplot. Ick. So many aspects that I didn't enjoy - but I did keep listening, so there's that.

But gross but still good submitted by lballard on June 10, 2022, 3:44pm I really didn’t care for the gross out details, but I love the main characters so I’m along for the ride. Liked the hidden clues. I’m a fan of mysteries that leave me feeling a bit of an idiot, and this one did.
