"In a world where the suns almost never set, a woman gains entry to a school of infamous assassins, seeking vengeance against the powers that destroyed her family. Daughter of an executed traitor, Mia Corvere is barely able to escape her father's failed rebellion with her life. Alone and friendless, she wanders a city built from the bones of a dead god, hunted by the Senate and its thugs. But her gift for speaking with the shadows leads her to the hearth of a retired killer, and a future she never imagined. Now, Mia is apprenticed to the deadliest flock of assassins in the entire Republic-the Red Church. Deadly trials await her within the Church's halls: blades and poisons, treachery and death. If she survives to initiation, she'll be inducted among the chosen of the Lady of Blessed Murder, and be one step closer to the only thing she desires. Revenge."-- Provided by publisher.

COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Excellent for fans of assassins and fantasy submitted by nsvinicki on June 29, 2018, 5:26pm Mia Corvere is out for revenge, and no one is safe.

This book came out during a popular time for Venetian-esque fantasy works. If you like "Lies of Locke Lamora" by Scott Lynch "Throne of Glass" by Sarah J. Maas or "Red Sister" by Mark Lawrence, you'll probably like this book. It follows the first six years or so of Mia's journey toward retribution for the framing and murder of her family at the hands of the Emperor and his lackeys. During this time, she learns the assassin's art, and

There's a really interesting magic system in this series, and I'm excited to see where Kristoff takes this. I won't tell any about that, because it's a wonderful mystery to solve as you read. Overall, it was easy to get into and the story was engaging and exciting. I picked up the second book, Godsgrave, immediately after finishing this. The only hiccup I had is that the language is thick and flowery - Kristoff spends a lot of time describing things to you. He seems to be a big fan of "tell and not show". This can be a pretty huge stumbling block for folks, so it's not for everyone. But it's worth giving a shot!

great submitted by zora on July 18, 2019, 10:54pm To be fair this book took me a while to get through. I really enjoyed the story once I got into it but that was the hard part. There were many parts that i just couldn’t connect with. It might have just been me and not the book whatsoever. I was expecting this to be my new favorite book but I didn’t really meet the expectations. I do recommend the book though.

Best series ever submitted by bhabay18 on June 11, 2023, 5:35pm This is one of my all time favorite books and series ever. The characters are complex, dark humor, and well written. Mister Kindly is the BEST
