A Glimpse into History submitted by Meginator on August 1, 2022, 3:17pm This Images of America book focuses on the Works Progress Administration and other federal employment programs in Detroit and the surrounding area during the late 1930s and early 1940s. Clemens tells the story entirely in photographic captions, a format that works well for this information as it allows her to directly connect these vast governmental programs with specific local projects and outcomes. The photographs have a nice variety to them, showing works on the job and revealing in the process much about what it was like to live and work in this area during the time period even beyond the specific scope of the book. The captions identify the people and places in the photographs and add useful historical and cultural context with clear, easily understandable prose, making this an excellent way to learn from direct evidence what the WPA accomplished in Detroit. This is a wonderful historical resource.
