Youth level.
Written by British-born author Frances Hodgson Burnett and first published in 1905, A Little Princess tells the story of young Sara Crewe, privileged daughter of a wealthy diamond merchant. All the other girls at Miss Minchin's school treat Sara as if she truly were a princess. But when Captain Crewe's fortune is sadly lost, Sara's luck changes. Suddenly she is treated no better than a scullery maid. Her own fierce determination to maintain her dignity and remain a princess inside has intrigued and delighted readers for almost a hundred years, even inspiring a recent popular feature film.

A beautiful tale of childhood submitted by gulickb on April 27, 2015, 10:11am There are some books that stay with you throughout your life. Books that move you in one way or another. A Little Princess is one of those books for me. On the surface the story is just about a girl who is orphaned and forced to live a life much less than she is used to. However, the books is so much more than that, it is a book that looks at the childhood innocence and shines a new light on it. It is full of beautiful language and great imagery.

I would recommend this book to everyone, but if you are especially interested in children's classics (or classics in general) then you should definitely read this!

A Little Princess Review submitted by WonderCat on July 8, 2018, 5:22pm This is a great book that I have read over and over again.
Here is a summary:
A British girl named Sara Crewe who is raised in India and is papered finds herself finally going to a boarding school for young ladies. She makes a new friend in secret and suddenly she is orphaned and does the same job as her secret friend. Through all hardships she continuously looks on the bright side.

I definitely suggest you read it, but not the abridged version.

Beautiful Well Written Story!!!! submitted by the_real_garfield on August 3, 2020, 9:11pm This is hands down my favorite childhood book! This book is actually what got me into reading!! The story is so well written, and you can literally feel the main character 's emotions. Sarah Crewe (the main character), is such a remarkable, inspiring young lady! She is so brave and SO patient! She went through so much hardships but she kept going on, and never gave up. I admire her fierce determination so much. It inspires me. I love how quickly the story moves, and all the beautiful little details that make this story memorable. I love her friendships, and the way that the story ends. It teaches so many valuable lessons too. I 100% recommend this story to EVERYONE. Promise it's worth it! You're missing out if you haven't read it yet!

A Little Princess submitted by SBNB on June 17, 2022, 9:48pm Great book! I used to love the VHS (the 80’s miniseries version) as a kid, and the book, which I first read last year, was just as good.

Different from the movie submitted by cats13 on July 29, 2022, 6:05pm This book is really good and suspenseful. The ending was very satisfying though maybe different than the movie adaptations. I won’t give anything away!

100% Childhood Favorite! submitted by suttonp on August 15, 2022, 2:30pm This is a wonderful book, interesting plot, well written, moving and uplifting. I have read it numerous times as a child and an adult. I love the version with Tasha Tudor illustrations the best.
