Making a Racist in the 50's submitted by sdunav on June 18, 2017, 12:27pm An enjoyable memoir mixing family history and reflections on coming of age in Florida (with roots in Tennessee & Virginia) in the late 1950’s. Dew went on to become a historian, partially because of his experiences with racism – or you could even say, because of his racist upbringing. He thinks that if he hadn’t gone to college in Massachusetts he may never have realized just how brutal slavery and Jim Crow really were (because it was easy to just go with the status quo). It’s interesting to think how this applies to racism today, too.
