COMMUNITY REVIEWS

great! submitted by jessNU on July 26, 2018, 8:49am Marshall & Syndack don't disappoint!

A wonderfully goofy posthumous collaboration submitted by FordAlpha on July 27, 2023, 9:37pm The illustrator and author James Marshall was gone all too soon, at age 50 in 1992. This story, published several years after his death, is his only published book that he did not illustrate himself. Maurice Sendak was a close friend of Marshall when he was alive, however, and has done more than justice to the goofy story, blending his own inimitable drawing style with Marshall's to make a convincing posthumous collaboration. Like many books (perhaps especially picture books) that are published posthumously, it does suffer a bit from the text's not having been polished by the author himself. The ending feels like it needed more work, for example. Still, this is a delight from start to finish, packed with puns both verbal and visual.
