Princess Solveig and her siblings are trapped in a hidden fortress tucked between towering mountains and a frozen fjord, along with her best friend and an army of restless soldiers, all awaiting news of the king's victory in battle, but as they wait for winter's end and the all-encompassing ice to break, acts of treachery make it clear that a traitor lurks in their midst.

Slow But Beautiful submitted by sdunav on June 19, 2012, 12:20pm This is a great middle-grade/YA book for kids who appreciate beautiful language (at the expense of action, sometimes) and Norse mythology.

The protagonist is the younger daughter of a Viking king, who is sent away with her beautiful older sister and her younger brother the heir, to a secluded fjord that is safe from the war that her father is waging with a neighbor. There is treachery and starvation, along with story-telling, ravens, and beserkers.

The combination of legend and everyday stuff really reminded me of the LOTR trilogy, along with the descriptive passages. This would be a really beautiful book to read aloud to older kids (or maybe do as an audio book?). There is some violence, and no sex but yearning for romance. I'm recommending it for kids 10+ (and adults!), but it would probably be fine for younger kids to hear if you don't mind the level of violence in LOTR books. The more I read the more I appeciated Kirby's use of language and story-telling abilities (stories about story-telling!).
