True Historical Fiction

This story starts rather slowly because Ann Rinaldi is carefully building the historical setting and casting the real-life characters that populate her novel. Susannah English is a real young girl who lived in Salem at the time with her well-to-do, forward-thinking family. In re-reading this book, I wished Rinaldi has put her afterword explaining the historical origins of her characters as a prologue, because knowing these individuals are real makes a difference as you move through the novel.
The story builds well, giving the reader plenty of inside information in order to follow the story clearly. It's an interesting theory of why and how the witch trials came about, but a simple explanation. It's great for a youth book and a solid introduction to the troubles and drama of those times.
